BARRIE – The Barrie Colts snapped their two-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the struggling Guelph Storm on Saturday night.
Guelph, coming into the game had lost their last five games, three coming in either OT or in a shootout.
Barrie opened the scoring just 2:12 into the game with Zachary Magwoods’s 21st goal of the season. The Camebridge, Ont., native extended his career high scoring season in goals, assists, and points with the first goal of the game. Magwood was on a nine-game goalless drought coming into the game, his last came February 2nd against the London Knights in an 8-4 win for the Colts.
Just 2:24 later, Aidan Brown scored his 4th of the season. The Newmarket, Ont., native tied his career high in points with 10, he had 10 (4 G 6 A) last season with the Colts.
The second period didn’t see any scoring for either team, but in the third, the goals came fast and furious.
Lucas Chiodo of Churchill, Ont., scored his 23rd of the season 8:06 into the final frame, giving the Colts a 3-0 lead over the Storm.
5:34 later, Dmitri Samorukov’s 10th of the season got the Storm on the board and ready to comeback from the three-goal hole they had dug themselves into. Samorukov had been held off the scoresheet in the past two games, his last points came last week against Erie in a 5-4 loss to the Otters.
Just 21 seconds later, Liam Hawel scored his 12th of the season, and the Storm were only trailing the Colts 3-2 with just a tick under six minutes to play in the game. Hawel was coming off a two-goal performance on Friday night against the Owen Sound Attack in a 7-6 OT loss.
With just 4:11 left, Guelph’s comeback attempt was completed as Barret Kirwin notched his 12th goal of the season. Kirwin’s first goal in seven games helped tie the game at 3-3, after it looked like all was lost for the Storm.
However, just 34 seconds later, Aidan Brown scored his second of the game and 5th of the season to give the Barrie Colts a 4-3 with 3:37 left in the game. With the goal, Brown surpassed his season best goal and point total.
With just 7 seconds left, Dmitry Sokolov of Omsk, Russia, put his 41st goal of the season into the open net and sealed the 5-3 victory for the Colts. This was Sokolov’s 21st goal since joining the Barrie Colts in January when he was dealt for Alexey Lipanov who is now with the Sudbury Wolves.
Leo Lazarev of Moscow, Rus., picked up the win for the Barrie Colts as he made 32 saves on the 35 Storm shots on goal. Lazarev now has a 28-16-2 record on the season along with a 3.24 GAA and a 0.897 SV%.
Nico Dawes picked up the loss for Guelph. The Burlington, Ont., native made 39 saves on 43 shots that were directed towards his net. Dawes record now falls to 1-6-1 on the season with a 4.39 GAA and a 0.878 SV%.
The Guelph Storm will host the Mississauga Steelheads tomorrow at 4:00pm at the Sleeman Centre, and will look to end their six-game losing streak.
Barrie will travel to Owen Sound to take on the Attack at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, puck drop will be at 2:00pm.
