SAGINAW – The CHL’s best Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds will travel to Saginaw to take on the Spirit on Wednesday night. It will be the sixth meeting of the season between these two teams. Saginaw won the last matchup, but Sault Ste. Marie holds a 1-4-1 advantage on the season.
For Saginaw, they come into the meeting with a four-game losing streak, getting outscored 16-3 and shutout once in that time. Despite their recent struggles, the Spirit still hold on to 6th place in the OHL Western conference, 1 point up on both 7th place Windsor and 8th place Guelph. In their last game, Saginaw lost 2-0 to the Oshawa Generals. Evan Cormier stopped 37 pucks, of the 38 that were directed towards him by the Generals. Oshawa would add an empty netter to seal the victory. The last time Saginaw scored more than 1 goal in a game was February 17th when they beat Flint 5-3.
Sault Ste. Marie on the other hand, hasn’t lost since they last played Saginaw back on February 14th in a 6-5 SO loss. Since then, the Greyhounds have won four straight games, outscoring their opponents 27-5, recording 1 shutout in that time. Their last game was a 6-2 win over the the London Knights. Morgan Frost had 2 goals in the game, moving him to 98 points on the season, which is 3rd best in the OHL and just 1 point back of the league lead which is held by Aaron Luchuk of Barrie and Jordan Kyrou of Sarnia.
The last game these two teams played in was two weeks ago when Sault Ste. Marie last travelled to Saginaw to play against the Spirit. The Greyhounds outshot the Spirit 42-25, but the Spirit were able to pot 5 goals against Tyler Johnson in the game. Evan Cormier made 37 saves on 42 shots on goal in the upset win for the Spirit. Saginaw had 5 different goal scorers in the game, Sault Ste. Marie did as well. Jack Kopacka and Morgan Frost missed on the two Greyhound shootout attempts, Cole Coskey and Blade Jenkins both scored, giving Saginaw the win.
That was the 2nd consecutive game between the two teams that needed extra time. Back on February 2nd, the Greyhounds came away with a 4-3 OT victory at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie. The Greyhounds went up 3-0, before the Spirit rallied back to tie the game at 3-3. Morgan Frost scored the game winner with 1:54 remaining in the 3-on-3 OT period.
